This pair earrings is made using the Kum-boo (or Keum-boo) technique. This is an ancient Korean gilding method for permanently bonding a thin sheet of 24-karat gold to the surface of another metal, most commonly fine or sterling silver. The name itself is Korean for "attached gold". The process relies on diffusion bonding, a permanent fusion of the atoms of the two metals under a combination of heat and pressure. The dimensions are in the second photograph and the scale is in centimeters.
